Rwenzori Mountains "Mountains Of The Moon"

The Rwenzori Mountains or Ruwenzori Range is a mountain range that marks the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; it is believed to represent the “Mountains of the Moon” referenced by the 2nd-century geographer Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus). The mountains were historically regarded as the origin of the Nile.

Situated just north of the Equator, the Ruwenzori Range spans a maximum width of 30 miles (50 km) and stretches 80 miles (130 km) in a south-north direction between Lake Edward and Lake Albert. The Ruwenzori Range descends sharply to the west into the Western Rift Valley, although its eastern slope is more gradual, extending towards the higher areas of western Uganda. In contrast to the majority of African snow-capped mountains, the Ruwenzori is not of volcanic origin; rather, it is a colossal horst comprising six distinct glaciated masses, with its Summit at Mount Stanley, specifically Margherita Peak, which stands at 16,795 feet (5,119 meters) and Albert Peak at 5087m/16690Ft, Mount Speke with Vittorio Emanuele at 4890m/15741Ft, Mount Emin with Umberto Peak at 4798m or 15741ft, Mount Gessi with Lolanda Peak at 4715m/15469Ft, Mount Luigi Di Savoia with Weismann Peak at 4620m/15157Ft, and Sella Peak at 4627m/15180Ft and Mount Baker with Edward Peak at 4844m/15892Ft . The main mountains of the Ruwenzori Range are divided by passes and severely eroded river valleys, all of which ultimately flow into the Semliki River.

Glaciers and little lakes are seen in the upper valleys. The permanent snow line is located at approximately 14,800 feet (4,511 meters) on the eastern side and 15,900 feet (4,846 meters) on the western side.

The mountain peaks are frequently obscured by cloud cover, formed intermittently by humid airstreams from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Queen Elizabeth National Park (Ruwenzori), established in 1952, is situated east of Lake Edward and south of the Ruwenzori Range in southwestern Uganda.
